There has been a lot of confusion in the debate about electronic
voting in regards to "receipts". It is very important that the voting
machine *not* produce something that the voter can take with him/her.
(I.e. a "receipt".) If they did, then 3rd parties could either pay or
strong-arm voters into voting a certain way and the receipt from the
voting machine would be the proof that the voter did as instructed.
Instead of saying the voting machines prints out a receipt
(implying the voter takes it with them), one should instead say the
machine prints out a physical record of the voter's choices that the
voter has a chance to review. This record stays at the voting precinct
and is only consulted to check the machine's accuracy or extenuating
circumstances.
