> Below is some information I have sent to the participants for
> Thursday.
>
> I want to thank you for your participation in the Linux Desktop
> Session at HECC. I would like to take this opportunity to provide you
> with some additional information and answer any questions you may have
> about Linux before the session begins. Due to the background of the
> schools participating, we will be using OpenSuse 10.1 as the operating
> system. Almost all of the schools who participate with IN ACCESS and
> choose Novell / Suse use the commercial version of Suse from Novell
> which has support. The reason we are using OpenSuse during the
> training is for the following reasons:
>
> 1. Since we will be working on Desktop and some server applications
> (Moodle, Ifolder) OpenSuse has both of those components. For
> Example, SLED (Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop, only has Desktop
> componets.
> 2. If a school is comfortable installing OpenSuse, they will have
> zero problems setting up and installing the commercial version of
> SUSE if that is the operating system they choose.
> 3. If a school chooses to not purchase the commercial verison or
> would like a play box, you can still get updates for OpenSuse.
>
> Hardware:
> As you might remember from the registration, you are expected to bring
> your own Linux compatible hardware. In the event you dont wish to
> bring a computer, please e-mail me ASAP and I can bring in a Linux
> Compatable computer for you.
>
> Please bring a Laptop or Desktop which meets the following specs:
> * 1.0 GHz processor or better
> * 512 MB RAM or better
> * 20 GB Storage or better
> * CD or CD/RW or DVD-ROM
> * Keyboard
> * Mouse
> ** If you bring a Laptop and the Wireless card is not automatically
> detected, we will not have time to configure the Wireless Cards, this
> will not impact your time during the session, since all software is on
> CD.
>
> If you would like to test your hardware, please download and run
> Knoppix, this program runs 100% from CD Rom, this will not write to
> your hardrive at all. [1]http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html
> I will be sending out more information as I get the information
> available. If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to e-mail
